ORGANISATIONS CANADIENNES SUPPORTENT LE TRAVAIL DE LA CICIG
CANADIANS SUPPORT CICIG’S WORK AGAINST CORRUPTION AND IMPUNITY
The undersigned Guatemalans, Canadians and organizations that have closely followed and supported the struggle against corruption and impunity in Guatemala, and observed the impact of the work of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) has performed, want to express our:
1) Recognition and support to the valuable work that the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) has carried out during its mandate. To name a few: dismantling La Linea, a criminal structure organized by former Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina, former Vice-President Roxana Baldetti and others, and prosecuting them for crimes of corruption, and more recently, presenting a legal case against the Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales for illegal financing of his political party FCN during the last elections.
2) Rejection of the decision by the Guatemalan Government and Guatemalan Army not to renew the CICIG mandate, without considering the opinion of the Guatemalan people and the international community.
3) Indignation against the Morales’ government measures designed to block the CIGIG’s work such as the removal of well trained National Civilian Police top commanders, and the firing /removing key people from the Historic National Police Archives, and confiscating the National Police archives, transferring it to the Ministry of Culture.
4) Condemnation of the intimidation that CICIG is receiving after the Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced his decision not to renew CICIG’s mandate.
Therefore we demand that the Guatemalan Government:
1) Stop the intimidation against CICIG members.
2) Guarantee the safety of the CICIG’s personnel, especially for the CICIG’s Commissioner Ivan Velasquez Gomez.
3) Renew the CICIG’s mandate.
4) Stop the intimidation and persecution of human rights defenders and organizations standing against corruption and impunity in Guatemala.

CANADIENSES APOYAN EL TRABAJO DE LA CICIG CONTRA LA CORRUPCIÓN Y LA IMPUNIDAD
Los abajo firmantes, guatemaltecos, canadienses y organizaciones que hemos seguido de cerca y apoyado la lucha contra la corrupción y la impunidad en Guatemala, y hemos observado el impacto del trabajo de la Comisión Internacional contra la Impunidad en Guatemala (CICIG), expresamos:
1) Reconocimiento y apoyo al valioso trabajo que la Comisión Internacional Contra la Impunidad en Guatemala (CICIG) ha llevado a cabo durante su mandato. Por nombrar algunos aportes: desmantelar La Línea, estructura criminal organizada por el ex Presidente guatemalteco Otto Pérez Molina, la ex Vicepresidenta Roxana Baldetti y otros, y llevarlos a tribunales por delitos de corrupción, y más recientemente, presentar un caso legal contra el Presidente guatemalteco Jimmy Morales por el financiamiento ilegal de su partido político FCN durante las últimas elecciones.
2) Rechazo a la decisión del gobierno guatemalteco y del ejército guatemalteco de no renovar el mandato de la CICIG, sin considerar la opinión del pueblo guatemalteco y de la comunidad internacional.
3) Indignación contra las medidas del gobierno de Morales diseñadas para bloquear el trabajo del CIGIG tales como la remoción de los bien entrenados altos mandos de la Policía Nacional Civil y el despido / remoción de personas clave de los Archivos Históricos de la Policía Nacional, y la confiscación de estos archivos, transfiriéndolos al Ministerio de Cultura.
4) Condena por la intimidación que está recibiendo la CICIG luego que el Presidente de Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, anunciara su decisión de no renovar el mandato de la misma.
Por lo tanto, exigimos que el gobierno guatemalteco:
1) Detenga la intimidación contra los miembros de la CICIG.
2) Garantice la seguridad del personal de la CICIG, especialmente para el Comisionado Iván Velásquez Gómez.
3) Renueve el mandato de la CICIG
4) Detenga la intimidación y la persecución de los defensores y defensoras de los derechos humanos y las organizaciones que luchan contra la corrupción y la impunidad en Guatemala.
